Heritage labels make up the foundation of menswear, but Barbour and Paul Smith’s latest collaboration is a strong reminder that, a little renovation is always needed This marks the third time that the exceptionally British labels have collaborated and this presents some of the most whimsical—and collectible—updates to Barbour’s covetable outerwear to date. The collection spans both men’s and women’s and includes nearly 40 products across outerwear, shirting, knits, footwear, and accessories, all dripping with references to Barbour’s signature Tartan and Smith’s electric stripes and selective neon palette.
Like any good link-up, the collaboration takes strands of each brand and infuses that DNA to make something new and fresh while still rooted in heritage. While the Tartan button-ups and colorblocked jumpers make for solid additions to any fall wardrobe, the clear stars of the show are the run of jackets and coats. Paul Smith takes Barbour’s iconic outerwear for a spin, dressing the classic Beaufort in inky, plush corduroy and beefy windowpane wool from British mill Abraham Moon.
The rebooted and menswear-beloved Transport Jacket gets a fresh coat of wax with a rusty red and subtle windowpane as well as a hardy charcoal wool. What makes these jackets especially unique is their linings, each of which have been imbued with a Smithian take on Barbour’s Classic Tartan. The throat latch also comes in a distinctive, eye-popping pink-magenta. While we appreciate and adore Barbour’s steadfast approach to dropping timeless jackets, these riffs are what make them exciting and relevant, not to mention fodder for future vintage collectors.
